We put this glossary together to make conversations more comfortable and accessible, as these terms may not be familiar to everyone. While we've included common terms, this list is not exhaustive: individuals may use identifiers beyond what is listed here, so always ask and honour the language someone chooses for themselves!
AFAB
Acronym meaning Assigned Female At Birth. Refers to the sex assigned to an infant based on anatomical and biological characteristics. Generally not considered an identity in and of itself - AFAB people may not identify as female.
Ally/Allyship
Used to describe those who support the LGBTQ+ community. Encompasses straight allies who suppose those within the community, as well as those within the community supporting each other.
Aromantic/Aro
Someone who feels little to no romantic attraction to others
Binding
The practice of flattening one's chest to create a more traditionally masculine or gender-neutral appearance.
Coming Out
The process through which an individual discloses their LGBTQ+ identity to others.
Drag
The art of dressing in clothing of a different gender. Drag queens dress in feminine attire, drag kings dress in masculine attire. Drag does not point to any gender or sexuality, and artists may identify in any way.
Genderqueer
Refers to individuals who do not conform to traditional gender distinctions. An umbrella term for people who see themselves as being both male or female, neither, or outside these categories entirely.
Gender Fluid
Refers to individuals whose gender identity may change or shift.
Homosexual
A term used historically to describe individuals attracted to individuals of the same gender.
Lesbian
A term used to describe women who are attracted to other women. See also: WLW
MLM
Stands for "Men Loving Men," used to describe gay, bisexual, pansexual, or other men who are attracted to the same gender.
Nonbinary
Refers to individuals whose gender identity does not fit within the traditional binary of male or female.
Polyamory
Refers to consensually engaging in multiple romantic or sexual relationships.
Queerbaiting
The practice of hinting at, but not actually depicting, same-sex relationships in media to attract LGBTQ+ viewers.
Straight
Refers to individuals who are attracted to individuals of the opposite gender. More colloquial term for heterosexual.
Transphobia
Prejudice, discrimination, or hatred towards transgender individuals.
Agender
Feeling no particular alignment to any gender, or having no gender at all.
AMAB

Biphobia
Prejudice, discrimination, or hatred towards bisexual individuals.
Butch
A term often used to describe individuals who express themselves in a traditionally masculine way, particularly within lesbian communities.
Deadname
The birth name of a transgender/nobinary person that they no longer use.
Femme
Refers to individuals who express themselves in a traditionally feminine way, particularly within lesbian communities.
Gender Dysphoria
Feelings of discomfort experienced by individuals whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth.
Homophobia
Prejudice, discrimination, or hatred towards LGBTQ+ individuals.
Intersex
Refers to individuals born with variations in sex characteristics that do not fit typical definitions of male or female. May refer to chromosomal variations or external and internal characteristics.
LGBTQ+
An acronym representing Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and others, encompassing diverse sexual orientations and gender identities.
Monogamy
Refers to the practice of having a single romantic or sexual partner at a time.
Pansexual
Refers to individuals who are attracted to others regardless of gender identity.
Queer
An umbrella term encompassing sexual and gender identities outside traditional heterosexual norms.
Sapphic
A term often used to describe women who are attracted to other women.
Transgender/Trans
Describes individuals whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth.
WLW
Stands for "Women Loving Women," used to describe lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, or other women who are attracted to the same gender.
Asexual/Asexuality/Ace
Refers to a complete or partial lack of sexual attraction or interest in sexual activity, often on a spectrum.
Androgynous
Refers to a person whose gender presents a combination of both male and female characteristics or identifying outside traditional gender norms.
Bisexual/Bi
Someone who is attracted to more than one gender, though this may not necessarily be in the same way or to the same degree.
Cisgender
Refers to individuals whose gender identity aligns with the sex they were assigned at birth.
Demisexual
A sexual orientation where individuals only experience sexual attraction after forming a strong emotional connection. Is considered to be on the asexual spectrum.
Gay
A term used to describe individuals who are attracted to individuals of the same gender.
Gender Euphoria
A positive feeling experienced when one's gender identity is recognized and affirmed.
Heterosexual
Refers to individuals who are attracted to individuals of the opposite gender. See also: Straight.
Intersectionality
The interconnected nature of social categorizations such as race, gender, and sexuality, which can create overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination.
Misgendering
Refers to the act of using language that does not correctly reflect an individual's gender identity.
Neopronouns
Non-traditional pronouns that some individuals may use to express their gender identity, e.g ze/zir or ey/em
Passing
Refers to a transgender person being able to be perceived as cisgender.
Questioning
Refers to individuals who are exploring their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Sexuality
Refers to a person's sexual orientation and attractions.
Transitioning
The process through which a transgender person changes their outward appearance to align with their gender identity.
